Virtues Workshop’s Spring Dates—Join Now!

Posted by Apr 05 2011 under Meetings

Come join us for sharing circles, self-reflection, and a deeper understanding of our spiritual and personal values in the Virtues Workshops this spring on the following Sundays from 12:15-1:45PM: April10, and 17.

Like the original Virtues Project now being used in more than 95 countries, our UU adaptation is designed to awaken the gifts of character, using discussion and materials that help us to remember who we really are and to live by our highest values.

The Virtues Project empowers us to live more authentic meaningful lives, to raise children of compassion and integrity, to encourage excellence and ethics in the workplace, to commit acts of service and generosity, and to heal violence with virtues.

Enroll now by contacting Rev. Jennifer Pader at 212-765-6340 or jp350@mindspring.com.

Making Sense of It All: UU Principles and the Humanist Way of Life

In some ways, the world seems to be turning upside down.

  • We see some cultures rising up against decades of dictatorship, while in the U.S., right-wing religious power and politics are undercutting democracy and freedoms.
  • Science is making incredible advances—like the amazing Watson on “Jeopardy”—while humanity is unable or unwilling to act logically and unselfishly to address issues like hunger, the environment, greed and injustice.

The Unitarian Universalist Association’s brilliant statement of Principles provides us with an ethical value system and a practical philosophy of life. It is based on religious and secular beliefs that can help people live positive lives, advancing justice, freedom and peace. Humanist principles of life are similar, although they are more overt in resisting authoritarian religion. Also, humanistic psychology, and particularly the Association for Humanistic Psychology, whose well-known proponents include Erich Fromm, Rollo May, Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, provides insights for leading the good life—for individuals and for society. How can we instill or restore these principles for ourselves, and for those we relate to personally and societally? How can we precipitate the needed paradigm shift? The speaker and discussion moderator will be Rev. Joseph Ben-David, Senior Minister of the Church of Humanism and a professional member of the Association for Humanistic Psychology.

Sponsored by the Church of Humanism, the meeting will be held at Fourth U (kindly use the 76th Street entrance). All are welcome. For more information: call 212-877-5662, email: HumFriend@aol.com or visit ChurchOfHumanism.org.
